Vienna Nightlife Guide
It is a city
reputed to be on the tame and cultivated side. Not a lot of people can call
Vienna as a happening party town, especially when one compares this to the
nightlife scene in London, New York
or Tokyo. But while the locals here are said to be already in bed before twelve
midnight and the evening may seem quiet and calm, somewhere, life and energy
flows in some parts of the city. You might just be surprised with what you
discover.
Nightlife does exist in Vienna. A small area near the Danube Canal called the
Bermuda Triangle is a good place to start. Bermuda Triangle has a string of
bars, dance clubs and pubs (beisln) that stand side by side on Vienna's cobbled
streets. These establishments normally hold karaoke sessions, which are fast
becoming a favorite past time here. Trendy bars are also located in the Freihaus
district. Here, the night is never really boring. Apart from the bars located
here, you will find a number of diners and restaurants, ranging from the
affordable to the expensive. A little more exploration will bring you to some
cafés and coffee houses, and in Vienna, you are sure to find a lot of these.
Relaxing and unwinding in these cozy establishments is typically how the people
of Vienna enjoy their nightlife --- simple, quiet and laid-back. What Vienna is,
essentially, is an artistic city. So, many of the parties and events do seem to
take place at art galleries, museums and art schools or universities; or in bars
and clubs with the artists crowd and art students. Additionally, if you enjoy
the theater, opera and classical music, then Vienna is your entertainment haven.
Bars & Live Bands
• Charlie P's is an Irish bar that provides great food and great entertainment.
It boasts of hospitable and friendly staff and the ambience is not pretty bad,
as well.
• A perfect place for social drinking is at First Floor. They offer a hundred
different kinds of drinks and a live band (jazz) comes to play during Monday
nights.
Clubs
• Non-lovers of mainstream music will find Flex their ideal watering hole. They
have a different DJ every night and Wednesdays are especially reserved for indie
music (independent music).
• Chelsea is a very popular rock club in Vienna. It has been in operation in
over a decade and many big-named bands usually perform here.
• Another popular club is Rhiz, which is already an institution in Vienna. The
entertainment in Rhiz is quite varied and they also cater to experimental music.
Rhiz does not only provide music for entertainment, on some nights they also
have film showings.
• The Living Room, which opened in the city's newest entertainment district in
Gurtel, is patronized by the hip and young clientele.
Theater & Opera
• Burgtheater, Volkstheater and der Joserfstadt (English Theater) are the most
recommended places for theater enthusiasts to check.
• Musikverien, a venue which is reputed for its wonderful acoustics, is where
the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs.
• For outdoor concerts, especially during warm summer nights, the best place to
be is at The Schonbrunn Palace.
• All visitors to Vienna should come by the state opera house, Staatsoper. It is
one of the world's best opera houses.
